I Stole Time, Reminiscing On a Future, I Will Have Forgotten or “The Man in the Red Dress” is grounded in a style that the artist, Mike Weary, calls “Dorian Gothic.” Weary ages and distorts his subjects to serve as a metaphor for various amoral experiences. The Man in the Red Dress is a self portrait that’s examines hyper masculinity and how it affects individuals in the black community. The red represents the aggression and violence stemmed from the need to exaggerate masculine beliefs. Weary depicts himself as an older man, weathered by stoicism and decaying from machismo, finally able to be vulnerable.
