An absurd double entendre. Junebug is in reference to the man in the painting and also the junebug resting on his face. Junebug is a common nickname used in the black community. The peice is a depiction of the corrosive effects that lynchings have on this world. The man has just survived a lynching where he was hung from the tree behind him. He has escaped across the river which is a symbol for rebirth. The man symbolizes the entire community that has to live on with the psychological, spiritual and quite literal scars of theses experience. The junebug placed on the lip symbolizes how the complete disregard amd eradication of black lives can make one feel as insignificant as an insect.
